After foil is removed the patch should still be a somewhat like rubber. This is a good time to trim it up and lift it from the glass work top. If I am using the patch as a flat piece, I lay it back flat. If I am going to mold it to a shape, then now is the time to lay over the area to be patch as it is flexible. Use screws or other things to hold it to shape.
